Jazz Guitar Solo Composition Study Series

Advanced Soloing Concepts

Jazz Guitar Solo Composition Study 1 is an advanced study which incorporates ideas from many music fields and styles. This is the first in a series of studies which examine solo composition and improvisation against jazz chord progressions. The student should have knowledge of the cage system, (knowing your way around the neck of the guitar,) key centers, and chord theory. Dexterity skills are important as well since there are no restrictions put on the level of difficulty.

In Jazz Guitar Solo Composition Study 1, the solo is approached and explained from 3 different composition and improvisation methods. The study includes exercises which allow the student to develop their own solos using these methods.

This is a Supplementary Lesson, level advanced. It includes 15 pages and CD/cassette. ($17.50)

Jazz Guitar Solo Composition Study 2. This is the second in a series of solo composition and ad lib studies. The progression examined is dominant 7 chords moving in a cycle of 5ths.

This is a Supplementary Lesson, level advanced. It includes 16 pages and CD/cassette. ($17.50)

Jazz Guitar Solo Composition Study 3. This is the 3rd in a series of studies which examine various methods of approaching jazz guitar solo composition. The chord progression is analyzed from a chord scale approach and from a modal approach. Those ideas are then reworked while incorporating chromatics. Page 14 is an exercise for the student to put to use the composition techniques. There is an opportunity for students to play their compositions along with music on the recording.

This is a Supplementary Lesson, level advanced. It includes 15 pages and CD/cassette. ($17.50)
