International Correspondence Guitar School
Music Theory Course for Guitar
|
|
Music theory is a science, or study, of composition and harmony. It deals with how and why things work. For example: Why does this chord work with that scale? Why do these chords work together? What is this called? Etc..
The study of music theory sets up harmonic guidelines and rules for the purpose of having a consistent base to work from. Although they can be interpreted as such, these rules and guidelines are not meant to be used as a method of "compose by the numbers." Theory lends insight. Insight gives a musician and composer more methods, choices, and understanding of harmonic situations. Theory is a tool for learning the various aspects of how sounds and tones interrelate.
This guitar course is divided into 8 sections. Each section is critical to understanding the whole picture.
It is possible to study music theory and not play an instrument, but the purpose of this course is to apply what you learn to your instrument ...the guitar.
The purpose of Book 1 is to make sure that the student has a working knowledge of the notes on the staff and the notes on the guitar. Knowing your way around the staff and the guitar is a must if you intend to apply any of the new knowledge you acquire.
The entire course is not easy and there is a great deal of writing involved. The course is at college level.
All assignments are graded and comments made where necessary. A certificate is issued upon completion of all assignments with at least 70% accuracy.
The staff is available to help students through problem areas. We want you to be successful with the course.
